Tokoname-yaki is one of the oldest pottery traditions in Japan, produced for more than 900 years in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture.
It is widely known as one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan (Nihon Rokkoyo) and is highly valued for its warm clay colors, natural textures, and beautifully handcrafted teapots and tableware.

At Manekineko-Ai, we carefully select authentic Tokoname pottery that reflects the character of its iron-rich clay, the skill of local artisans, and the timeless beauty that fits naturally into modern living.

History of Tokoname-yaki
Tokoname-yaki began in the late Heian period and developed into one of Japan’s major ceramic production centers.
In ancient times, large jars, pots, and everyday ware were produced in great quantities and distributed across the country.
Because of its long tradition and cultural significance, Tokoname is recognized as one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.

In modern craft culture, Tokoname is best known for its high-quality kyusu teapots,
which are shaped and polished with remarkable precision.
The iron-rich clay produces natural reddish or deep black tones,
and the teapots are appreciated for enhancing the aroma and flavor of Japanese tea.

Characteristics & Techniques

• Shudei (Red Clay)
Tokoname’s iconic reddish clay, rich in iron, creating warm earthy tones.

Kuro-yaki (Black Fired Ware)
Dark, refined black surfaces fired in a reduction atmosphere.

Kyusu Teapots
Handcrafted teapots with smooth pouring, fine filters, and excellent balance—highly valued by tea lovers.

Unglazed Natural Beauty
Many Tokoname items are unglazed, allowing the texture and warmth of the clay to be fully appreciated.

How to Choose & Use Tokoname-yaki

When choosing Tokoname-yaki, look for pieces with a smooth, matte surface and rich red clay tones. This natural warmth comes from the iron-rich soil of Tokoname and gives each vessel a gentle, grounded feel.

For everyday tea or table use, cups and teapots with clean lines and unglazed surfaces enhance the flavor of tea and make the piece easy to hold. For cooking or serving, bowls and kyusu-style vessels distribute heat evenly, making them both practical and elegant.

Tokoname-yaki grows more beautiful with use — the surface slowly gains a soft sheen as tea and hot water interact with the clay, creating a personal patina unique to each owner.
