 History of Arita-yaki

Arita-yaki began around 1616 when potter Yi Sam-Pyeong discovered high-quality porcelain stone
at the Izumiyama quarry in Arita.
This discovery marked the beginning of Japan’s first true porcelain culture,
distinguished by its pure white body and durability.

During the Edo period, Arita porcelain was exported from the port of Imari
to Europe and other regions, becoming widely known as Imari porcelain.
Arita-yaki’s refined designs had a profound influence on early European porcelain,
including Meissen and other historic kilns.
