About Bizen Yaki

“Bizenyaki” is a pottery made in Bizen city, Okayama prefecture. After drying the piece which
is made one by one with a high-quality clay, it is fired without painting and glaze which gives
an additional charm to the piece.

It is one of the “Six Ancient Kilns” of Japan, and it has a thousand years of history. Bizenyaki
is well known for a rustic and a deep style, with a warmness and usability. But the greatest
feature is the change of the pottery’s color when it’s fired. The porcelain’s color and surface
changes due to the kiln’s condition during the firing, so a same piece will not be created again.
Therefore, it is called the “the art of earth and fire”.

The finish of the work changes by the kiln’s condition. If the work is covered with ash while
burning, it doesn’t get enough heat and it will be airless, which becomes to reduction firing
(smoked). Therefore, the color will be gray/ dark gray/ blue. This is called “youhen”. The
method of baking let nature take its course, so a same piece will not be created. The finish of
the work will be classified into few types.

How to take care
The minute roughness on the Bizenyaki surface gets smoother the more you use, and it adds
more calm taste to the piece.
