Sazanka — the sasanqua camellia — is the flower that opens when everything else has stopped, through late autumn and into winter. Here it is carved in relief and filled with enamel, white on green for one cup, red on yellow for the other, over a speckled grey ground. The rims are pinched slightly out of round, so each cup sits differently in the hand.
Kutani ware with a unique sense of beauty that is valuable even after hundreds of years. The patterns that skillfully draw the five colors of red, green, yellow, purple, and navy are wonderful brush strokes, including 花鳥風月Kachofugetsu(Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon), 山水人物Sansuijinbutsu(Landscape, Person), and innovative geometric patterns.
