The gold arabesque is drawn freehand over a coloured ground, one tendril at a time, and fired again so the gold sits raised against the coarse black band beneath it. One cup is red, one is green — the old Kutani pairing for a couple. The foot is left unglazed, so the clay itself is what you hold.
Kutani ware with a unique sense of beauty that is valuable even after hundreds of years. The patterns that skillfully draw the five colors of red, green, yellow, purple, and navy are wonderful brush strokes, including 花鳥風月Kachofugetsu(Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon), 山水人物Sansuijinbutsu(Landscape, Person), and innovative geometric patterns.
