The cranes and clouds are not painted on. Each shape is carved into the clay while it is still leather-hard, packed with white slip, then scraped flush and glazed over — an inlay technique the Goryeo potters called sanggam, and the cloud-and-crane pattern is its most famous subject. Because the white sits inside the body rather than on top of it, the celadon glaze runs over the whole thing unbroken, and the fine crackle crosses pattern and ground alike.
