About Nara Brushes
Nara brushes represent one of Japan’s most respected brush-making traditions, refined through centuries of craftsmanship. Their defining characteristic lies in the traditional technique known as the Neri-Maze Method (kneading and blending method). In this process, carefully selected raw hairs are first individually soaked and prepared, then meticulously blended according to precise ratios and dimensions determined by each brush’s intended performance. This labor-intensive method produces brush tips with exceptional balance, resilience, and a uniquely expressive writing feel that cannot be replicated by mechanical production.
The origins of brush culture are said to date back over 2,000 years to China’s Qin Dynasty. In Japan, brushes were introduced alongside Chinese culture during the early Asuka period. It is traditionally believed that Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), after studying in Tang-dynasty China, brought advanced brush-making techniques back to Japan, where they were passed down in the Yamato region — present-day Nara — giving rise to Japan’s earliest brush-making tradition.
Nara brushes continue to embody this rich heritage, preserving the spirit, discipline, and refined skills of master artisans. To this day, they are highly valued by calligraphers, artists, and professionals who seek precision, control, and subtlety in every stroke.
Akashiya has been dedicated to brush making in the historic Yamato region for over 300 years. Originally serving as official brush artisans for the great temples of Nara, Akashiya has continued to uphold and advance the cultural legacy of fine Japanese brushes while maintaining uncompromising standards of quality.
