Japanese horse-chestnut / Tochi
(Features)
Tochi is called silk wood grain and is a species with beautiful fine grain. A diffuse-porous wood with indistinct annual rings. The color is yellowish white to pale yellowish brown. The fine grain of wood has a silky luster when polished, and the shrink is "crepe-shaped wood grain". Also known as the "ripple mark", it is prized. A useful material that has low durability but is excellent in workability and large diameter trees can be harvested.
Shrink wood grain, wave wood grain, mottled wood grain, etc. are treated as rare trees.
(Producing area)
It grows naturally in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Especially in the Tohoku region and southern Hokkaido. It is also distributed in China.
(Color tone)
The boundary of the sapwood is indistinct, and the whole is pale reddish yellow white to pale yellowish brown. The surface of the material has a silky luster. Significant ripple marks may appear on the surface.
