It grows naturally in the mountains from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Some reach a height of 20 m or more. The amount of accumulation is small.
The bark is dark gray and scaly. The boundary between the sapwood and the heartwood is distinct, the sapwood is pale yellowish white, and the heartwood is pale yellowish red to pale red. The annual rings are narrow and uniform. Compared to Futaba pine such as Japanese red pine, the wood grain is finer, lighter and little deviation. Easy workability such as cutting.
