Tanuki — the Japanese raccoon dog — is a beloved folk figure in Japan, believed to bring good fortune, abundance, and laughter. Tanuki statues, famously produced in Shigaraki, are seen at the entrances of restaurants and homes across Japan.
Each tanuki carries the Eight Virtues — from the wide-brimmed hat for protection from trouble, to the round belly for calm decision-making.
